Processing techniques commonly used for stainless steel sheets, stainless steel sheet bending process

Sheet Metal Processing

Bending characteristics of stainless steel sheets:

1. Due to its lower thermal conductivity and lower elongation rate compared to ordinary carbon steel, stainless steel requires greater deformation force.

2. Stainless steel sheets exhibit a strong springback tendency compared to carbon steel during bending.

3. Compared to carbon steel, due to the lower elongation rate of stainless steel sheets, the bending angle R of the workpiece should be greater than that of carbon steel during bending to prevent the possibility of cracking.

4. With its high hardness and significant cold work hardening effect, stainless steel sheets require tool steel with a heat treatment hardness exceeding 60HRC when selecting bending tools. The surface roughness of these tools should be one order of magnitude higher than that of carbon steel bending tools.

Points to note for bending stainless steel sheets:

1. For a given size, the thicker the stainless steel sheet, the greater the bending force required. Moreover, as the thickness of the stainless steel sheet increases, there should be a larger margin of bending force when selecting bending equipment.

2. For a given size, the greater the tensile strength and the smaller the elongation rate, the greater the bending force required, and the bending angle should be larger.

3. When the thickness of the sheet in the design drawing corresponds to the bending radius, according to experience, the flat size of a single bend workpiece is obtained by adding and subtracting two sheet thicknesses from the sum of the two sides. This method can fully meet the design accuracy requirements and simplify the calculation process by using empirical formulas to calculate the flat size, significantly improving production efficiency.

4. The higher the yield strength of the material, the greater the elastic recovery amount. To achieve a 90-degree angle for the bent part, the angle of the press tool should be designed smaller. Compared to carbon steel of the same thickness, stainless steel requires larger bending angles, which should be carefully considered to prevent bending cracks and maintain the strength of the workpiece.
