CNC Press Brake: Operation Methods and Guidelines

CNC press brakes are vital tools in the metalworking industry, offering high precision and efficiency for bending sheet metal. Proper operation and adherence to safety guidelines are crucial for optimal performance and longevity of these machines. This article provides a comprehensive guide on the operation methods and safety procedures for CNC press brakes.

 Operation Methods

 1. Starting the Machine

1. Turn on the Power Switch: Activate the main power switch to power up the machine.
2. Start the Oil Pump: Engage the oil pump (you will hear the pump's sound).

Note: The machine will not operate at this stage.

 2. Stroke Adjustment

- Adjust the stroke to prevent damage to the die or the machine.
- Ensure that when the upper die descends to its lowest point, there is a gap equivalent to the thickness of the sheet metal between the die and the sheet.

 3. Bending Slot Selection

- Select a slot width approximately 8 times the thickness of the sheet metal.
  - For instance, to bend a 4mm thick sheet, choose a 32mm slot.

 4. Back Gauge Adjustment

- The back gauge can be adjusted quickly using an electric control or fine-tuned manually.
- This method is similar to that used in guillotine shears.

 5. Starting the Bending Process

- Press the foot pedal to start the bending process.
- Unlike guillotine shears, the CNC press brake mold can be released at any time.
- Release the foot pedal to stop bending, and press it again to continue downward movement.

 Operating Procedures

 1. Safety Rules

- Strictly adhere to safety operating procedures.
- Wear appropriate protective gear.

 2. Pre-Start Check

- Inspect the motor, switches, wiring, and grounding.
- Ensure all control parts and buttons are in the correct positions.

 3. Die Inspection

- Check the alignment and firmness of the upper and lower dies.
- Ensure the positioning device meets processing requirements.

 4. Returning to Home Position

- If the upper slide and positioning axis are not at the origin, run the return-to-origin program.

 5. Test Run

- Perform an empty run for 1-2 minutes.
- Move the upper slide through its full stroke 2-3 times.
- Stop immediately and address any abnormal sounds or malfunctions.

 6. Coordinated Operation

- One person should be designated to oversee operations.
- Operators and pressing personnel should work closely together.
- Ensure assistants are in safe positions before signaling to start bending.

 7. Safe Operation

- Secure the sheet metal during bending to prevent it from lifting and causing injury.
- Disconnect the power before adjusting the sheet metal press die, and only make adjustments when the machine is stopped.
- Do not touch the lower die when changing its opening.
- No personnel should stand behind the machine.
- Do not bend sheet metal at one end only.
- If the workpiece or die is misaligned, stop the machine and correct it; do not attempt manual correction while the machine is running.

 8. Other Precautions

- Do not bend overly thick, quenched steel plates, alloy steel, square steel, or materials exceeding the machine’s capacity.
- Regularly check the alignment of the upper and lower dies and the pressure gauge.
- Stop the machine immediately and troubleshoot if any abnormalities occur.

 9. Shutdown Procedures

- Place a wooden block under the lower die and lower the upper slide onto it.
- Exit the control system program.
- Turn off the power supply.

The Nature and Function of CNC Press Brakes

CNC press brakes use electromagnetic force to clamp sheet metal, consisting of a frame, worktable, and clamping plate. The electromagnetic clamping allows customization of the press plate according to workpiece requirements, simplifying operations and enabling the processing of workpieces with side walls.

 Conclusion

Operating a CNC press brake involves a series of precise steps and strict adherence to safety guidelines to ensure efficient and safe bending of sheet metal. Proper preparation, calibration, and maintenance are crucial to maintaining the machine's performance and extending its lifespan. By following the outlined methods and procedures, operators can achieve high-quality bending results while maintaining a safe working environment.
